Spanish while travelling

Many valuable archaeological remains have been preserved in Malaga, including rock paintings in the caves of Ronda. Throughout the province there are also traces of Phoenician, Roman and Moorish rule. The main monuments are the Roman theatres in Ronda and Malaga, the Roman village of Río Verde in Marbella, as well as the Alcazaba fortifications, Gibralfaro Castle and the cathedral in the capital. The cathedral of Malaga was originally supposed to have two towers, but one of them has never been completed. For this reason, it is humorously called “one-armed”.

Spanish on the move

Costa del Sol, meaning 'the coast of the sun', is a real paradise for golf lovers - they will find here invariably good weather and the largest range of golf courses in Europe. The 160 km of coastline also provides the opportunity to practice any water sport, in one of a dozen or so specially prepared sports centres. Malaga also offers a full range of disciplines that provide extreme experiences, such as ballooning, hang-gliding and paragliding, bungee jumping, trips to the Hundidero-Gato and Nerja caves and climbing.

Spanish through nature

Malaga boasts not only of its access to the Mediterranean but also of its mountainous areas and numerous national parks. Both the varied terrain and the associated climate diversity contribute to the rich landscape. Pink flamingos, which nest here every year, are a gem among the animal species living in the province.

Spanish through culture

The province has been made famous in the world of art by Pablo Picasso, who was born here. The Museum of Fine Arts in the capital exhibits his early works. Malaga has a rich tradition of craftsmanship and is known primarily for its pottery and artistic smithery. Apart from clay ceramics, figurines and whole folk scenes are made here. In the towns of Marbella and Estepona one can find hand-woven carpets, Ronda is known for its wooden furniture production and the best folk and horse riding outfits come from Antequera.

Spanish through cuisine

The province is rich in fresh fish and seafood as well as game, fruit and vegetables. It is also known for its excellent raisins and fine wine. Malaga's cuisine is based on high-quality ingredients, the dishes are simple and very healthy, such as fritura malagueña, a fish fried in olive oil, ajoblanco cooler – a local variety of gazpacho with almonds and grapes or espetos – sardines roasted over hot coals.
